Sunshine - (Studio) 7"x 5", Oil on panel

Cactus Stand - (Plein Air) 9"x 12", Oil on panel. This painting was was honored with an AWARD OF MERIT in the Outdoor Painters Society "Plein Air Southwest" show in 2009.
Quarter After Six - (Plein Air) 8"x10", Oil on panel. (SOLD) This is the Franklin County courthouse in Mt Vernon, TX. Like many small town centers, it was bypassed years ago by the interstate. Too quiet now for some, but not this Dallas Metroplex refugee. My wife toured the Don Merideth Museum (it's his home town!) and the few open shops on this Saturday afternoon, while I worked at my easel. Afterwards we had an excellent dinner at Mickey's Cafe just behind me on the square.
South of Main, Mt Vernon - (Plein Air) 5"x7", Oil on panel. (SOLD) Sunday morning off the square in Mt Vernon, TX. I'm told this East Texas town, and Franklin County seat, is actually named after the historic George Washington estate. You might be right to guess where the county name comes from as well.
Rider Study 2 - (Studio) 10"x8", Oil on panel. As a painter, I love the horse for its sculptural quality - and the interaction of these stately beasts with their riders.
Gray Suit - (Studio) 10" x 8", Oil on panel. Part of a living history group, Civil War Center of Texas, this gentleman played a part in one of the twice yearly gatherings at Beaumont ranch in Grandview, TX. Immersing themselves in the speech, customs, costuming and activities of the times, all participants research their roles for the 1860's reenactments to be as true to the historical period as possible.

T Truck - (Studio) 6"x8", Oil on panel. (Available at Frame Up Gallery) My wife tells stories of her family being part of an antique car club when she was a child. We saw this Model T truck recently at a car show in Big Bay while visiting family in Michigan.  "As it chugs along the road, the radiator springs a leak. It doesn't mind how big the load, even though the tires do squeak." - E. B. Clemens
Roses and Crabapples - (Still Life) 5"x7", Oil on panel. (SOLD) The typical 90+ degree heat withers the Texas growing season, but these hardy antique roses still put forth summer color.
Hot Sun Deep Shade - (Plein Air) 9"x12", Oil on panel. View from the roadside, the horses were on the property of His Hill Bible School in Comfort, Texas. I first did a quick sketch before the horses moved into the pasture below. My wife and I were staying the weekend with a good friend - who stopped by to say it was 106 degrees. I love the heat. The road, used mostly by uphill residents and weekend camp traffic, surprisingly, also brought conversation with two hikers and a cyclist.

Along College - (Plein Air) 6"x8", Oil on panel. (SOLD) Storefronts off the Square in Waxahachie, TX. This was painted during the 4th annual "Paint Waxahachie" event. It received BEST OF SHOW honors in the judging.

Braids - (Studio) 5"x7", Oil on panel.
Gold Headband - (Studio) 5" x 7" Oil on panel.
This small work was inspired from some reference taken at a local pow wow.

My interest ranges from landscape to figurative to still life and western in subject. With sketchbook in-hand, I explore the possibilities wherever I happen to be. I work mostly in oils, both studio and plein air, my passion being the outdoor painting. Appealing to the wanderer in me, it combines a love of the outdoors and the challenge of capturing what I see with pen, pencil and brush.

"A MOMENT'S PAUSE"

Graphite on paper. Approx. 7x5".  (SOLD) "Pencil painting" is how Ferdinand Petrie introduced this method of drawing while I attended duCret School of Art. I love the sense of color that the use of various lead hardnesses will produce.
