PLEIN AIR 2

Bois d'Arc in the WoodsBois d'Arc in the Woods - (Plein Air) 5 x 7", Oil on panel. Along Muddy Creek in Sachse. My Upper-peninsula Michigan raised father-in-law once visited here in search of "Osage Orange". He'd read about the trees in cowboy novels as a kid. American Indians made excellent bows out of the wood from the trees he said. As I learned, the French also had a name for the trees in honor of such a noble use - hence the title of the painting.

Bluegrass on the Square - (Plein Air) 7 x 5", Oil on panel. Nothing like being entertianed while painting! Some of my favorite music, this bluegrass group was participating in a town festival on the courthouse square at the start of the 3rd annual Waxahachie Paintout. The historic town is filled with Victorian houses built during its heyday as the cotton-growing capital of North Texas. Each year, a number of the homes are opened up for the popular "Gingerbread" tour. This piece received 1ST PLACE honors in the judging competition.

At Richards Park - (Plein Air) 7 x 5", Oil on panel. This is the recently renovated ballpark at Waxahachie.

The Quilter - (Plein Air) 8 x 10", Oil on panel. SOLD
This young woman was part of the living history staff at Old City Park in Dallas. Painted during the 2-hour "Quick Draw" of "Plein Air Texas", she was working on the sunny porch of one of the vintage buildings. I was pleased that she planned to be there for the time that we were given.

Derelict - (Plein Air) 12 x 9", Oil on panel.
This old caboose rests in a salvage yard in Wylie, TX. I understand it may become a renovation project at a local high school.

Winter Woods - (Plein Air) 16" x 12", Oil on canvas.
Winter in this part of Texas usually comes a few days at a time. But not this December week. Though it looked cold, it was shorts and t-shirt weather.

At the Preserve - (Plein Air) 5" x 7", Oil on panel.
At Spring Creek Preserve in Garland on a warm November afternoon. Quickly being surrounded by development, the natural wooded park runs along a deep white rock creek.

Ben Davis Barn - (Plein Air) 12" x 9", Oil on panel.
North Texas barn on the blackland prairie.

Creek Shallows - (Plein Air) 12" x 9", Oil on panel.
Duck Creek on an April afternoon. A little windy, but warm day to set up an easel.

 June 14th - (Plein air) 7" x 5", Oil on panel
Cloud study. These are as close as we get to mountains in this part of Texas. And the views can be spectacular.

These works are painted almost entirely on site (I usually leave a few finishing touches and signature for the studio). One of the pleasures of painting is observing and recording. I like to be faithful to the subject matter to give a true sense of time and place as well as manipulate to create a visually interesting piece.
