Winter Camp at Clements Scout Ranch in Athens, TX takes on a number of themes. These were among a group of Boy Scouts and adult Scouters who demontstated the independent spirit of the early American trappers and explorers.
This piece received 'JURY'S TOP FIFTY" recognition at Greenhouse Gallery's 2008 Salon International competition in San Antonio.

I get references for characters like this one through reenacting events and my son's Boy Scout Venturing Crew. The crew, based here in Dallas, has a late 1800's chuckwagon/frontier theme and carries on the skills and traditions of the period.

At a Pow Wow in north Texas. The dance competitors keep with tribal customs in the careful making of their regalia, but add their own personality and history. This contestant is a U.S. Marine - his outfit incorporates the colors of his country and symbols of his military branch

While cowboy hats and neckerchiefs tell of cattle drives and trail rides, they also represent the self-sufficiency and hard work that anchored the building of the American West. This gentleman is part of a BSA Venturing crew that preserves some of the skills of blacksmithing and open range cooking required in settling this country's early frontier.
